Reconstruction of Stellar Orbits Close to Sagittarius A*: Possibilities for Testing General Relativity
نویسندگان
چکیده
We have constructed families of possible orbits for a collection of stars located within 0.5” of Sgr A*. These are constrained by observed stellar positions and angular proper motions as listed in Ghez et al. (1998). Reconstructing these orbits allows us to make useful predictions for the likely positions of these stars in future observations. We also show that some of these stars may exhibit significant relativistic effects, allowing for interesting possible tests of general relativity around the 2.6× 10M central object. We have reconstructed possible orbits for a collection of stars located within 0.5 arcsec of Sgr A *. These orbits are constrained by observed stellar positions and angular proper motions. The construction of such orbits serves as a baseline from which to search for possible deviations due to the unseen mass distribution in the central 1000 AU of the Galaxy. We also discuss the likelihood that ...

متن کاملEffects of Secular Interactions in Extrasolar Planetary Systems
This paper studies the effects of dynamical interactions among the planets in observed extrasolar planetary systems, including hypothetical additional bodies, with a focus on secular perturbations. These interactions cause the eccentricities of the planets to explore a distribution of values over time scales that are long compared to observational time baselines, but short compared to the age o...
متن کاملRelativistic precession around rotating neutron stars: Effects due to frame-dragging and stellar oblateness
General relativity predicts that a rotating body produces a frame-dragging (or LenseThirring) effect: the orbital plane of a test particle in a non-equatorial orbit precesses about the body’s symmetry axis. In this paper we compute the precession frequencies of circular orbits around rapidly rotating neutron stars for a variety of masses and equations of state. The precession frequencies comput...
متن کاملTesting General Relativity with Pulsar Timing
Pulsars of very different types, including isolated objects and binaries (with short- and long-period orbits, and white-dwarf and neutron-star companions) provide the means to test both the predictions of general relativity and the viability of alternate theories of gravity. This article presents an overview of pulsars, then discusses the current status of and future prospects for tests of equi...
